MPPT solar controllers are the most efficient, however my old solar kit came with a PWM controller. So i started to monitor the solar panel output and after a month I had all my stats and then decided to try an MPPT controller out to see if ti was better.
Being a gadget man I saw Victron had just released their new solar controller with built-in bluetooth and it was at a great price too, so that was it. I had to have it as it would allow me to monitor the solar stats in much greater detail, for example the app allows you to view your history of solar consumption fro the past 30 days. Using the app you can setup the controller to work with different type of batteries too.
After 1 month I had my stats again and I was getting more than 1 amp more form the Victron controller than the old PWM controller. 1 amp might not sound like enough but if you consider you only need daylight for solar to work, you get at least 8 hours of daylight even in winter and that means an extra 8amps of free power going into your batteries just by using a different controller – that’s a no-brainer.
